Edu has reportedly rejected a tempting offer to triple his salary in order to remain at Arsenal, following the announcement of his shock departure from the club. The Gunners have confirmed that their sporting director is leaving after an incredibly successful five-year tenure.
The , who returned to in 2019 as the club's inaugural technical director, has been instrumental in transfer dealings behind the scenes. Reports suggest that he is set to sign a contract with Evangelos Marinakis' multi-club ownership, representing Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave.
It's been suggested that the Brazilian's wages will triple if he finalises the move as expected. In a desperate attempt to retain him at the Emirates, and it has been suggested that Arsenal tried to match this deal. According to , via , the Gunners made a counter-offer similar to Marinakis', but the allure of working within a multi-club model was too strong to resist.
Edu has since shared his thought process behind his decision. Speaking to official website, he said: "This was an incredibly hard decision to make.
"Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club's history. It has been a special journey and I thank Stan, Josh, Tim and Lord Harris for the support they've given me.
"I've loved working with so many great colleagues across our men's, women's and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend. Now it is time to pursue a different challenge.

Arsenal are set to embark on their first match without Edu when they face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Gunners then have a tough away game at Chelsea before the international break, with a potential encounter against Edu's new team Forest looming at the end of the month.
