Cristiano Ronaldo

The prodigal son's return in the summer of 2021 promised so much but resulted in very little, as Ronaldo's second stint as a United player was over as quickly as it began.

A little more than a year after touching down in Manchester, the superstar's contract was ripped up after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan. In it, Ronaldo criticised the club's below-standard state and his new manager, Ten Hag, calling him a "liar" and adding that he didn't respect him.

With this, the Champions League-wanting Ronaldo severed all bridges with Ten Hag, who would go on to state that the 39-year-old "had to go" - and go he did, jumping ship for the and Al-Nassr.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho’s £73million price tag weighed over him at Old Trafford, and he was another star who went public with his battle against Ten Hag.

Two years after his arrival, the Dutchman dropped him against for 'poor training performances,' and Ten Hag issued a plea for other players not to fall foul in a similar fashion.

The winger took offence to this, posting on social media after the match that this claim was "completely untrue" and calling himself a "scapegoat." According to sources, this angered his head coach.

That January, Sancho was shifted out on loan to his former club, Borussia Dortmund. Although he returned this year after apparently clearing the air with Ten Hag, he was still offloaded on an initial loan to evidencing that perhaps there is still a slight rift between boss and player.

Zidane Iqbal

It wasn't just senior stars that Ten Hag clashed with during his tenure, with youngster Zidane Iqbal also getting on the wrong side of the Dutchman.

In July 2022, Iqbal, who had been given a few pre-season stints in the first team, looked to have a future at United but was the subject of an X-rated rant from Ten Hag.

Expletives aimed at the starlet could be heard in a training video, with Ten Hag shouting: "Keep the ball on the floor... Zidane! Hey! Keep the ball! F***ing rubbish!"

Iqbal would not get a senior competitive minute under the Dutch coach for the 2022/23 season. Despite wishing for a loan move in January, he was forced to wait until the following summer, when he was permanently offloaded to Utrecht for £850k.

Harry Maguire

Despite initially featuring quite prominently under Ten Hag, centre-half fell out of favour last year. With the Dutchman wanting him gone, he was stripped of his captaincy and placed on the chopping block.

On the other hand, Maguire wanted to stay and fight for his place - and did - as his proposed move to in 2023 collapsed because of the defender's tentativeness.

However, Ten Hag didn't give him a chance, and he remained on United's periphery before the head coach's dismissal and perhaps will remain there under Amorim.

The Englishman was also quite critical of Ten Hag constantly being on the verge of an exit last year, saying: "It was tough. It probably did damage our performances and results throughout the season."

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial is another player who was ousted from United's fringe under Ten Hag. The French forward was exiled from first-team training in 2023, not due to an injury but illness.

After missing four games due to illness, Ten Hag believed that Martial had not regained match fitness and forced him to train alone. This banishment was a harsh indictment of exactly where Martial stood in Ten Hag's estimations.

Heading into the new year, Martial suffered from a groin issue and underwent surgery in January 2024, effectively ending his time at Old Trafford. Two years after a lacklustre loan move with Sevilla, Martial's contract was allowed to wind down this summer. He is now playing for AEK Athens.

Marcus Rashford

Despite being the star of Ten Hag's debut season with his 30 goals across all competitions, Rashford was no stranger to receiving the cold shoulder from the 54-year-old.

On December 31, 2022, United travelled to Molineux to face However, they started the clash without star man Rashford, who overslept and turned to a pre-match meeting 45 seconds late.

Ten Hag, therefore, removed him from the starting XI, and Rashford would later go on to voice his disagreements, exclaiming that he "wasn't even that late" to on The Overlap.

David de Gea
