"He was absolutely outstanding – this typified his first half. A little pass around the corner… Harry Winks is a player who you think could play at international level. I know he has played at international level," Neville told Sky Sports.

"But I look at him and think England lack a player who can get us playing. And he is very good at that. He might be better suited to international football actually than club football. He was outstanding in the first half.

"But what he has to do in the second half, when it's more difficult for him, is he has to still get on the ball and dominate the game – that's what the best players do in that position. He got nullified in the second half and that was the turning point in the game because Forest had to tighten up."

Winks played all 90 minutes on Friday as Leicester fell to a 3-1 defeat in the East Midlands derby. The visitors raced into the lead through Ryan Yates, before Jamie Vardy struck to level the tie going into the break.

But Chris Wood struck twice in the second half to steal the three points for Forest. In better news for Winks, new England boss Thomas Tuchel has hinted he is ready to cast a wide net for his squad.

“The talent and potential is obviously huge. But for me, even more importantly, the character of the players is one of a kind. It was amazing for me to see the character, determination, grit and hunger that it takes to perform at this level," he said after his appointment.

"To have the chance to work with such a talented group makes me excited. I think we have everything to win titles and that’s what I’m here for. It’s a new schedule for me, coming from club football – but it’s the FA, with the biggest tradition.

"It’s the Three Lions. It’s the country with the most competitive league and it’s an extraordinary squad of players. Competing with this country and this group of players for the biggest prize was very quickly very exciting for me and my staff. That’s why we didn’t need long to think about it.”
