MAFS star says he thought bedwetting sign of drinking too much before cancer diagnosis

Send Push

star, Ryan Livesey, left his new bride in shock when he told her he'd had cancer on the programme last night.

The loveable bin man, 29, from Manchester, was diagnosed with bladder cancer aged just 22 when his former partner was expecting their son, Leo.

Revealing he found out about the condition after wetting the bed, Ryan admitted he initially thought it was because he'd had too much to drink.

Recalling the moment he received his diagnosis, he said: "I started wetting the bed, it was really embarrassing, but I put it down to having too much to drink, and, of course, I didn't tell anyone and hid it. I’d go to the toilet and not feel like I was emptying my bladder properly. I’d have to go again 20 minutes later because I couldn’t hold it in."

Explaining that he began to urinate blood, Ryan continued in : “I was 22 years old, my ex-partner was pregnant with my son, who was due in November that year. I was about to be a father, and I had weed pure blood."

After reluctantly making an appointment with his GP in June 2017, the dad-of-one was diagnosed with stage two bladder cancer. “I was in complete shock,” Ryan admits, adding: “I remember my doctor saying the word cancer and I felt instantly numb."

Ryan, who had been suffering with the symptoms for several months, needed surgery to remove the cancer and scrape the lining of the bladder. He also had chemotherapy.

Saying he wishes he'd gone to the GP sooner, the semi-professional footballer admitted the huge toll of the diagnosis came crashing down on him during treatment for one of three recurrences that happened in the next 18 months.

Explaining he felt "really low" even after his beloved son was born, he said: “I felt anxiety, depression – all I could think about was the fact I was so excited about being a dad, yet I hadn’t taken my health seriously.”

Thankfully, Ryan is now in remission and is urging men to pay attention to their health and not put it off out of embarrassment or pride.

The inspirational Mancunian and TV bride Sionainn were the last couple to enter the latest series of ’s MAFS UK in scenes aired last night.

Plucky Scot, Sionainn, who arrived for the ceremony sporting a white mini dress and a huge white bow in her hair was initially unsure about her groom. Admitting Ryan reminded her of her ex, she told her family she was concerned he was "just a pretty boy with no substance". However, when she found out about his health battle - after losing her own dad to cancer - and adorable little boy, Leo, she softened and apologised for 'misjudging' him.
