Outer Banks fans were thrilled this week as the hit series has officially been renewed for a fifth season on .
However, it’s not all good news as the streamer also confirmed the fifth outing would be its last.
The hit young adult drama follows a gang of teens known as the Pogues who hunt for treasure along the coast of North Carolina, with the series now jetting off to Morocco for the second half of season four coming this week.
Throughout their adventures, they clash with their wealthy rivals, the Kooks, and make surprising discoveries about themselves and their mysterious family histories.
Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline lead the series as John B Routledge and Sarah Cameron, who will most likely return for one last globe-trotting treasure hunt.
Fans of the popular drama were thrilled at the announcement, though many agreed the news was “bittersweet” as it means they’ll soon be saying goodbye to their favourite adventurers.
“Kind of bittersweet,” someone commented on Reddit. “Really happy we are getting another season but also sad it’s the final. Was really hoping for 6 seasons.”
Another fan remarked: “One of the longest running new gen teen shows. The end of an era.”
“I’m gonna miss this show idgaf if season 5 probably hasnt even started production yet,” a third fan admitted.
One gutted fan exclaimed: “FINAL?????? WHAT IS THIS NEWS?? did the creators not just say a few months ago that they wanted seasons 4, 5 and 6(?!!) to be a separate trilogy.”
“It makes sense but I'm sad it's ending,” another said. “5 seasons is a good run though.”
While a final viewer simply replied: “No one talk to me, I’m sick.”
To supplement the announcement, Outer Banks’ co-creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke penned a letter to fans assuring them the fifth season will bring the story to a satisfying conclusion.
“It seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five-season story, but here we are at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away,” they wrote.
“[Season five will] bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago… We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.”
The creators also confirmed the second half of season four will end with a bumper feature-length finale, so there is plenty more Outer Banks for fans to look forward to before the adventure wraps up.
Outer Banks season 4, part 2 releases Thursday, November 7 on Netflix.
