Paul Scholes makes honest admission about punditry job – 'Look like a villain'

Manchester United icon has opened up about the challenges of punditry when expressing views on his currently underperforming former club.

With a career that spanned over 700 games and saw him win 11 titles, Scholes is firmly cemented as an unflappable legend. Since hanging up his boots for good in 2013, he's shifted gears towards media work with outlets like and .

But as United in the league, relying on the for any semblance of success this season, Scholes has candidly spoken about the guilt that comes from critiquing the club and just how the outfit he loyally served for years have been of late.

"I only do [punditry for] games now," Scholes revealed, speaking on , brought to you by Sky Bet.

"I very rarely do other games because I want to watch United, and I want to be at the United games. Ever since I've started doing it, it's not been great [United's performances].

"I don't think I saw them win for a long time, and you look terrible having a go at your club when that's the club you played for, for 20 years – it's the last thing you want.

"It'd be so easy if you were a player for the last 10 years," he revealed. "Where we are now, it makes you look like a bit of a villain."

Despite hiring Ruben Amorim and ending Erik ten Hag's tenure to spark a revival at Old Trafford, United are still waiting for their fortunes to change. With just a single transfer window under his belt, the Portuguese manager is struggling to elevate the Red Devils into the top half of the Premier League.

Only seven matches are left in the season, and the club faces the prospect of finishing on an exceptionally sour note, as they've amassed a mere 38 points from 31 games, signalling that this is likely to be their worst campaign in the Premier League era so far.

, a pundit and former team-mate of Scholes, has also voiced his dissatisfaction with the progress under Amorim. Speaking to Sky Sports following United's goalless draw against Manchester City on Sunday, Keane didn't mince words.

"I know United beat and Real Sociedad – but you look at the last few games and you go: this is not enough, this is not good enough," he stated.

"Forget the United teams I played for, forget the top three or four teams, competing with Brentford, , and ? Are you telling me Manchester United should be behind them? The majority of these players should be doing better than the teams I just mentioned."
