Search for biggest rodent in the world 'danger zone' update after escape from UK zoo

Zoo keepers have paused a search for a giant rodent that escaped over fears she could enter a danger zone. Cinnamon the capybara did a runner from Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World some time on Saturday.

The one-year-old was seen in a field nearby on Tuesday and in a thermal drone image the next night. But capture efforts were halted so she did not get too stressed or wander on to military barracks that border zoo property.

The zoo said she was content and could graze in Telford, Shrops, with no risk from predators.

It added: “Continued disturbance of where Cinnamon is living could cause her to relocate to an area that could be dangerous. We are also bordered by the MoD.”

Capybaras, native to South America, can grow to more than 4ft in length and 2ft tall. Keepers hope to capture Cinnamon in live traps they have set. The zoo added: “We will check these multiple times a day, but won’t be doing further mass searches until Friday night.”

The zoo also informed that they had reported the escape to the council as per their zoo licence conditions. They urged anyone who spots the animal to contact the zoo directly on 01952 677 917 or 07908 726 240 if between the hours of 5pm and 9am, asking not to report sightings on Facebook as they may be missed, reports Birmingham Live.

The establishment issued a caution regarding Cinnamon, urging the public not to approach her. They advised: "Under no circumstances should a member of the public try to capture the animal by themselves.

"Although Capybara are generally friendly and inquisitive animals, the animal should not be approached as it could become unpredictable if alarmed or cornered."
