In a truly unique tribute, a family in Gujarat’s Amreli district recently bid farewell to their 12-year-old Maruti Suzuki Wagon R with a grand ceremony that has created a lot of buzz across social media. Declaring the hatchback their “lucky car,” the family spared no expense, spending Rs 4 lakh on an event attended by around 1,500 guests, including local spiritual leaders.
The heartfelt farewell took place at the farm of Sanjay Polara, a construction businessman from Surat. The car was adorned with marigold garlands and rose petals, and was carefully transported from the family home to a prepared site at the family’s agricultural land. There, in a strikingly ceremonial fashion, the car was guided down a 15-foot-deep slope into its final resting place, complete with a traditional puja and blessings.
Polara explained the car’s sentimental value, sharing how it brought prosperity and respect to his family. “This car was more than just a vehicle; it was part of our journey toward success. Instead of selling it, we wanted to honour it with a lasting memory for future generations,” he said.
A video capturing the event has gone viral on several social media platforms including Instagram and X. It shows the decorated Wagon R being laid to rest with professional videographers documenting the ceremony. The family also planted trees around the site, further symbolizing the car’s meaningful role in their lives. Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R has long held its popularity in the hatchback segment and remains a favoured choice among buyers. It comes with two engine options: a 1.0-liter three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine. Additionally, a CNG variant is also available.
