Sri Lanka held Bangladesh to a draw in the first Test at Galle, as the visitors ended the match with several positives. The skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto led the team from the front and scored centuries in both innings, rescuing the side from difficult situations and steering it into more comfortable positions.
Shanto averaged just 29.14 in Tests over the past year while heading into the series. However, he made key technical adjustments to overcome his lean patch. The No. 4 batter revealed that he had a clear plan for tackling the Sri Lankan attack and chose to ignore outside criticism.
"I am very happy (with my hundreds). The preparation was good. I did some technical things in my batting, before coming on this tour. I know the conditions and opponents' threats as well. I had a plan. I still have one match left so I don't want to reveal too much. I was clear about what I wanted to do, so I am really happy. There will always be criticism and discussion but the main thing is how I can contribute to the team,” Shanto said.
Shanto emphasized that his focus is on enjoying the game rather than worrying about others' expectations or what is being said about him.
"Whether my work ethic and intention is right or not, it is pleasing that I tried to contribute to the best of my ability. I look to improve myself every day, rather than focusing on what anyone is saying. It is more important whether I am enjoying my cricket, or whether I am able to contribute to the team. I have no expectations of what people are saying about me," he added.
Shanto scored 273 runs in the match, setting a new record for the highest run aggregate by a Bangladesh captain in a Test, surpassing Mushfiqur Rahim’s 200 against Sri Lanka at Galle itself in 2013.
