Several star Indian cricketers have signed up with county sides to fine-tune their skills and gain match experience in the upcoming County Championship 2025 season. Notably, county cricket and the One-Day Cup are excellent platforms for Indian players looking to polish their game.

Especially those hoping to push their chances for national selection or make a strong comeback. Over the years, many Indian cricketers have benefited from the county system. The format has provided a different challenge, with seaming conditions, longer spells for bowlers, and a tight schedule.

India’s veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is set to return to Northamptonshire for a second stint in the English county circuit. The 34-year-old will join Northants from June 22 for the County Championship Division Two and the One-Day Cup.

Chahal, who made headlines last year with a strong county debut, taking 19 wickets in just four Championship games and claimed 5 for 14 on his List A debut against Kent. His best performance came against Derbyshire, where he recorded career-best match figures of 9 for 99. In the recent IPL 2025 season with Punjab Kings, the leggie bagged 16 wickets in 14 games at an economy of 9.55.

Ishan Kishan is set to make his County Championship debut for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge on Sunday, June 22. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter, who recently featured in the India A tour to the UK, didn’t find a place in the senior men's squad. However, he has extended his stay in the country after signing a short-term deal with Nottinghamshire and will also play against Somerset on June 29.

Kishan is set to replace South Africa's Kyle Verreynne, who is away on national duty. Ishan has been out of the Indian team since December 2023, after opting out of the South Africa Test series. While his teammate Shreyas Iyer has returned to the ODI setup, Ishan is still awaiting a comeback. With over 3,400 first-class runs, including eight centuries, Kishan will hope for a strong county debut.

Tilak Varma is another Indian cricketer to join the County circuit, signing a short-term deal with Hampshire for four County Championship matches in June and July. The 22-year-old, who has been a regular member of India's T20I team for over a year, will now look to show his red-ball abilities in England.

Despite playing just 18 first-class games, Tilak has an average of 50.16 with five centuries, including one for India A. The southpaw will replace South Africa’s Dewald Brevis. Notably, Tilak can’t play in the T20 Blast due to BCCI rules, but he’s expected to make an impact in the Championship, starting with the Essex clash at Chelmsford on June 22.

He is also expected to play in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

The 28-year-old has represented India in six ODIs and 23 T20Is and captained Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He averages 41.77 in first-class cricket with seven centuries and a List A average of 56.15 with 16 tons. Gaikwad has been out of action since suffering an elbow injury during the IPL 2025. However, he returned to fitness in the India A intra-squad clash ahead of the England Test series.
