Almost everyone loves a steaming plate of delicious momos along with the spicy red chutney that adds extra punch and heat to the momos. Its rising popularity led to many variations in the dishes like fried momos, tandoori momos and even Afghani momos. But have you ever wondered what these do to your gut health? Gastroenterologist, Dr Pal, recently shared a video where he shared his word of caution for momos.
In the video, Dr Pal warned to steer clear of fried momos and to eat steamed ones instead, but in moderation. He also added to be wary of the sauces, as they can affect gut health.
What else to remember while eating momos?
According to AIIMS New Delhi experts, since momos are slippery, if it's swallowed without being properly chewed, they may lead to choking and even death. This warning was issued after a man collapsed while eating momos at a shop. As per the post-mortem reports, a dumpling was found at the opening of the windpipe, which led the medical expert to believe he died from choking on a momo.
If you are eating momos from a stall or restaurant, always prioritise the vendor’s food safety measures and hygiene practices.
Also, momos are made of refined flour, aka maida. It is the starch part of the grain and does not have any fibre in it. It is also bleached with chemicals that give it a soft texture. These chemicals can harm the pancreas and affect the production of insulin in the body.

Celebrity dietitian Rujuta Diwekar has also weighed in before about the healthier momo option in the market. However, she called all the momos “equally bad” unless one is trekking in Spiti or Kinnaur or someone has offered homemade momos. She shared that in the metropolitan cities, momos are street food. However, she added that it's best to indulge in momos once a week.
