Tata Consultancy Services ( TCS) is in talks with Indian and foreign telecom companies to deploy its end-to-end indigenous 4G/5G stack developed in partnership with homebred equipment-maker Tejas Networks, a top executive said.
“We have technology that is second to none,” said N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Advisor to TCS (Telecom Strategic Initiatives) & Chairman of the board of directors, Tejas Networks.
“We have the functions, the features, and the technical capabilities, along with the experience of deploying a large project like this. As we speak, we are engaging with multiple operators, both in India and abroad, and there are opportunities that we will leverage,” he said.
The Tata Group’s IT services arm and the government’s Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) have operationalised 40 data centres of varying capacities in state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.’s ( BSNL) premises across all telecom circles of the telco as part of its Rs 15,000 crore mega deal for 4G network deployment.
Dismissing reports about the delay in delivery of the BSNL project, Subramaniam said “there are no delays. First, we received the contract in July 2023, and we have 24 months to implement it, so we are well on our way to completing it well ahead of schedule.”
"We will in fact deliver it before time and BSNL will soon do a formal launch. Already 40 data centres on BSNL premises across the country have been operationalized, 38,000 sites have been deployed, which are carrying live commercial traffic. We are deploying at a speed of 500 sites per day," he told ET.
The TCS-led consortium, which is responsible for end-to-end planning, design, installation, commissioning and optimisation of the mobile network, includes C-DOT and indigenous telecom equipment-maker Tejas Networks. TCS parent Tata Sons has a majority stake in Bengaluru-based Tejas Networks.
The project marks TCS’ gateway into the 4G and 5G communications infrastructure segment and pits it against global competitors like Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei, as it won the deal after almost a year-long negotiations.
Subramaniam said his vision for Tejas Networks was to become “an end-to-end telecom equipment provider, both in the wireless space but also in the wireline space.”
“We also aim to enter the enterprise segment, which includes all routers, switches, long-haul switches, equipment, and radios required. I believe they have the experience and expertise to accomplish all of this,” he said.
He added that Tejas is embedding AI in all equipment for radios to optimize energy consumption, self-healing capabilities and other intelligent algorithms.
When asked about AI taking over India’s cost advantage in IT services, the executive responded in negative.
“No, I don't think it will take away the advantage because talent is ultimately available in India. The more we can automate, the better. In my experience, we have automated many processes before. There is an efficiency that we create by disrupting ourselves through automation. Once we disrupt ourselves and the customer sees that we have been able to generate savings for them, they will want to do more business with us,” he explained.
