Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan recently revisited her childhood home in Mumbai’s Nehru Nagar Society, taking viewers on a nostalgic journey through a space that once held her family’s struggles and memories. Known today for her lavish residence and successful career, Farah chose to highlight her humble beginnings in a new vlog series.
Walking through the small one-bedroom apartment, Farah recalled how her mother, Menaka Irani, had to sell the house when the family faced financial difficulties. The downturn followed the failure of her father Kamran Khan’s film, which plunged the family into debt. The filmmaker explained that while her current home often garners attention for its grandeur, her earlier years were spent in a space so small that five family members had to share a tiny bedroom.
Memories of a Modest Home
Inside the old flat, Farah reflected on the absence of basic comforts. She remembered how the family had no sofa and slept on mattresses spread out on the floor. The kitchen, she noted, was so compact that daily chores were challenging. With no telephone, they often communicated with neighbors through the window.
Her cook and longtime collaborator, Dilip, accompanied her on the visit and was surprised by the size of the rooms. He joked that even her current storeroom is larger than the entire flat. Farah responded that hard work transforms circumstances, and she credited her journey for helping not only her own family but also people close to her, including Dilip, for whom she contributed to building a bigger home.
Struggles and Survival
Farah has often spoken about the hardships of her early life. In an earlier interview with Karan Thapar for ITV India, she revealed that her father’s film failure left the family below the poverty line within days. Her parents sold off cars, furniture, and even her mother’s jewelry to repay debts. At one point, they rented out their drawing room for small gatherings to generate income.
Her father’s battle with alcoholism further strained the family, eventually leading to her parents’ separation. Farah recalled that her father passed away with almost nothing, a stark reminder of the difficulties they endured.
From Struggle to Success
Despite these challenges, Farah Khan’s determination paved the way for her entry into Bollywood. She found her breakthrough as a choreographer with the song “Pehla Nasha” in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992). Over the years, she became one of India’s most celebrated choreographers, working with stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Hrithik Roshan. She later moved into directing with films like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om, cementing her place in the industry.
Today, while she lives in a sprawling three-storey home with a swimming pool, her visit to the Nehru Nagar flat served as a reminder of her journey from scarcity to success.
