Shubman Gill plays a captain's knock, smashes consecutive tons against England

Indian captain Shubman Gill got to his consecutive century on Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Wednesday.

The batter now has two centuries in as many matches as the captain of India, while it was his seventh Test ton. The batter reached the milestone off 199 balls with a boundary against Joe Root.

After being put into bat first, India lost KL Rahul early. Karun Nair and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a little partnership before the former fell at the stroke of lunch. Gill, batting at No. 4, grinded hard for his century and stitched important partnerships with Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. His knock was laced with 11 boundaries.

Earlier, Jaiswal, who had also smashed a century in the first Test, missed out on anoter ton by just 13 runs, having been dismissed by Ben Stokes for 87 runs.

Rishabh Pant scored 25 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja was unbeaten on 39 at the time of Gill's century.

For England Chris Woakes picked up two wickets, while Stokes, Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir picked a wicket each.
