A throwback video of Greater Noida dowry victim Nikki Bhati has surfaced online, showing her smiling as she drives a Mercedes. The clip, once just a happy moment, is now being shared with grief and anger, days after her tragic death.
Nikki, in her mid-20s, died on 21 August after being set ablaze at her in-laws’ home. According to police, the attack followed an argument over her wish to reopen her beauty parlour. Her husband, Vipin Bhati, allegedly objected, saying that running a parlour and posting reels were “not allowed” in his family. The quarrel escalated into violence, and he is accused of setting her on fire.
A Marriage Marked by Dowry Demands
Nikki married Vipin in December 2016, the same year her sister Kanchan married Vipin’s brother, Rohit. Her family claims she endured constant harassment for dowry despite already giving her in-laws a Scorpio SUV, a Royal Enfield motorcycle, gold, and cash. They allege the demands continued, with her in-laws pressing for an additional Rs 36 lakh.
Nikki and her sister ran a beauty parlour together and actively promoted it through Instagram and YouTube. One of their Instagram pages has more than 58,000 followers. It was on this account that the now-heartbreaking Mercedes video was shared, showing the young woman’s joy before her life was cut short.
Her brother said that two years into her marriage, Nikki began facing renewed dowry pressure. Over the years, she returned to her parental home several times due to harassment but was sent back each time after so-called “settlements”. On 21 August, shocking videos of the fatal assault surfaced online. One showed a man pouring thinner on Nikki as she sat on the floor, another showed Vipin assaulting her, and a third captured her, severely burnt, staggering down the stairs before collapsing.
Arrests and Investigation
Testimonies from Nikki’s young son and her sister pointed to Vipin and another woman as being directly involved. Vipin was arrested on Saturday after a police chase and has been remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. His mother was arrested a day later, followed by his brother and father on Monday.
The investigation continues, with her family demanding the strictest punishment for those responsible. Nikki’s death has once again drawn attention to the grim reality of dowry harassment and violence that continues to claim lives.
