Children’s Day, a day dedicated to the adorable, bubbly, and always excited little humans, is all about making their childhood happy and beautiful. In India, Children’s Day is extra special because it also celebrates the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on November 14, and he too was fond of children, their innocence, their curious nature, and their zeal to learn.
Schools across the nation celebrate Children’s Day with love and enthusiasm, and the day is marked with skits and presentations, theatre performances, good food, and more.
The celebrations
Children’s Day is a celebration to mark childhood, the years of innocence, of fun, of mistakes, trials and errors, and above all, the years when you are loved by all. And then on 14th November, children do not just celebrate their day but also the birth of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, or ‘Chacha Nehru’ as he is famous.
Nehru believed that the future of India rested in the hands of its young minds, and shaping them towards success and progress is the way to go not just for India but also the world.
For children, this day brings excitement and joy, and it gives them a break from the everyday routine, especially those who go to school. While usually children get to school, open their bags, study, eat, and then depart, on this day they come with a different form of excitement in their eyes. Why? Because they know that Children’s Day celebrations mean no studies, loads of fun, and of course, their favourite food from the school canteens.
The teachers plan various events for them, from performances, games, and even special treats, making the day memorable for all the students.
The joy of Children’s Day decor
For many teachers and school helpers, decorating the halls, the classrooms, and the school in general, brings a lot of joy and satisfaction. Preparing skits for the students to watch, planning the menu and sweet treats, and even planning the activities that they will engage in is a form of true joy.
Every corner of the school is used as a canvas, and every element of decoration be it colourful paper, or old stained sheets are added to the decor.
And so, if you too are on the planning team for Children’s Day celebrations, here are some creative ideas to make the day worth it.
Classroom themes
For starters, as the children spend most of their day in school inside their classroom, a theme for each classroom could be set, after deciding with the students. For example, while some classes might like Superman and Batman, the others would be enchanted by forests and fairies. So, keep some cutouts and posters of their favourite characters, and hang them up on the class board to surprise the children.
Photos for the class
If possible, ask the school photographer to spend atleast 10 minutes in each class, asking the students to pose for the camera with their friends, teachers, solo, and with the whole class. Use the props you already have, from pom-poms to makeshift hats, and ask the students to style themselves according to their wish.
Once done, stick some best pictures on the class board.
Artwork by children
Another fun activity would be to engage the students with sheets, paints, and colours. For everyone and anyone interested, arrange some white sheets, pencil colours, some paints, and more, and then ask them to be creative. From space adventures to simple landscapes, let them paint and draw whatever they wish, and let them be happy with their creations.
At the end, select one best painting or drawing from each class and stick it to the school board.
Balloons for the class
What better way to celebrate than with balloons and flowers and more? Just at the entry doors of the school and the classroom, stick on some balloons, and inside it add some glitter and decorative paper to make it more fun.
To take it up a notch, you can also add toffees inside, and then ask the students to pop the balloon and then distribute the toffees to each of them.
A board for quotes
For the higher classes, preferably 10th, 11th, and 12th, basically the children no more interested in paints and balloons, have a board of quotes. It is the age when children become enchanted with authors and their favourite quotes, and it will be a great way to engage with them.
Give them all a newspaper page, and then ask them to cut out the alphabets that will form the sentence of their favourite quote. Then on a chart paper, stick the cuttings in an aesthetic way, and stick it up on the class board.
Mini potluck
Another amazing idea for Children’s Day will be a mini potluck. Ask the students to get from their homes their favourite dishes for their classmates. It could be something as simple as maggi and idli, or as convenient as a Pizza. As soon as they reach school, ask them to open their tiffins on the desk, and share away with their classmates and friends.
