Following the horrific stampede in Bengaluru, which claimed 11 lives and injured several more, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) implemented strict measures to oversee IPL teams' post-tournament celebrations. Speaking to India Today, Saikia emphasised the board’s commitment to safety, stating that the BCCI is “taking every aspect of risk very seriously to avoid any future mishaps.”

BCCI's new guideline for IPL trophy celebration

The stampede occurred last month outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where thousands had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s historic IPL title win. The chaos, reportedly sparked by poor crowd control and overlapping public events, turned the victory celebrations into one of the most devastating incidents in Indian sporting history.

Initially, the BCCI maintained that it had no involvement in the events leading to the incident. However, facing mounting pressure, the board has since formed a three-member committee to investigate and propose safety measures.

Under the new regulations, IPL teams will no longer be allowed to hold celebratory events within 72 to 96 hours of winning the championship. This move aims to discourage hurried or poorly coordinated gatherings. All such events will now require formal, written approvals from the BCCI as well as clearances from local authorities, including the police, state administration, and municipal bodies.

Franchises will also be mandated to implement robust security arrangements covering every leg of the celebrations—from airport arrivals to the venue of the event. Multi-layered security protocols will be a key requirement under the updated guidelines.

BCCI secretary on steps to prevent mishap

BCCI secreatry Devajit Saikiya while speaking to India Today said that the board was ‘taking every aspect of risk very seriously to avoid any future mishaps.’

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has announced its intention to introduce a new crowd management bill. The proposed legislation will hold event organizers legally accountable for safety lapses, with penalties including steep fines and up to three years of imprisonment.
