Mumbai: A recent stray dog survey conducted by the BMC in collaboration with Humane Society International/India (HSI) has shown a decline in the stray dog population, from 95,172 to 90,757 over the past decade. Notably, dog density dropped by 31.6% across 19 civic wards.
However, in four wards—E-Byculla, N-Ghatkopar, R South-Kandivali, and T-Mulund—dog density increased by 19.9%. Meanwhile, in D-Pedder Road and Malabar Hill, the density remained unchanged, reflecting varied trends in different areas.
The 2024 census, conducted to gather accurate data on the population, distribution, and health status of stray dogs in Mumbai. It will aid the BMC in developing targeted strategies for population control and animal welfare.
The report, released by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Chanda Jadhav at the BMC headquarters on Thursday, indicates that the decline in stray dog numbers over the past decade can be attributed to the success of sterilisation efforts. Despite a general decrease, the increase in dog density in four wards could be due and migration of dogs from outside, says the report.
The 2024 stray dog census, which surveyed around 930 km of Mumbai's streets, found an average of 8.01 dogs per km, compared to 10.54 dogs per km in the 2014 survey. In slum areas, the density was recorded at 224 dogs per sq. kms. showing a reduction of 21.8% in dog density on the streets and 27.4% in slums over the past decade.
As per the survey report, between 1994 and December 2023, the BMC sterilised 4,03,374 stray dogs. NGOs have played an active role in the sterilisation efforts, with 8 to 10 NGOs participating in the program.
From 2014 to 2023, these organisations sterilised 1,48,084 dogs, with the highest number of sterilisations (24,290) occurring in 2017 and the lowest (6,414) in 2015. Over the decade, the average annual sterilisation was 14,808 dogs.
