Chaos Erupts in J&K Assembly as PDP MLA Moves Resolution For Restoration of Article 370

Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed a ruckus on the first day of its session after the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para moved a resolution seeking restoration of Article 370 for the Union Territory.

As soon as the PDP MLA moved this resolution, BJP members led by former minister Sham Lal Sharma raised the question about moving this resolution. Sharma said Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather that a member can not move such a resolution under the rules.

Amid the din, the Speaker adjourned the House for 15 minutes to restore calm and order before the Lieutenant Governor's address.

While congratulating Abdul Rahim Rather on his unanimous election as Speaker of the J&K Legislative Assembly, Para said, "Sir, I congratulate you on being elected as the Speaker of the House. We will learn much from your experience. Today, I have a resolution on behalf of my party that I wish to submit before you. The resolution calls for the restoration of

Amid Para's speech, BJP MLAs urged the Speaker to dismiss the resolution immediately. Speaker Rather, attempting to calm tempers, responded, "This is my domain; let me examine this and decide on the resolution accordingly," he said while trying to pacify the opposition.

The 28 BJP legislators, however, refused to settle and continued to oppose the PDP MLA's move. BJP Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma remarked, "This is unacceptable on the first day, such matters should not be introduced in this House".

The Speaker told agitating BJP members, " I have not yet seen this copy. Let me review it and examine it. If you have decided not to let this House function, then I have nothing more to add"

The House continued to witness commotion as BJP MLAs refused to sit, insisting that the resolution brought by MLA Para be discarded. The House was adjourned for 15 minutes amid chaos and a ruckus.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah responded to the resolution by stating that a single MLA's private resolution during the Speaker's election remarks holds no significance.
"Today I didn't plan to make a political statement. But if this resolution were serious, it should have been presented with broader support, including ours. Instead, it seems to have been done just for cameras andhe observed.

Omar acknowledged that the majority of people in Jammu and Kashmir still oppose the changes made in August 2019, which revoked the region's special status. However, he downplayed the impact of a lone MLA's resolution, particularly during remarks made immediately after the Speaker's election.
