Actress and producer Sandra Thomas has made a bold and alarming statement about the rampant drug abuse in the Kerala film industry, claiming that it is not just a known issue but an organized one — with dedicated budgets and private rooms on film sets for drug use. Her revelations come amid a series of controversies surrounding substance abuse in Malayalam cinema, where many incidents have surfaced but few actions have been taken.
Shocking RevelationsIn an interview with Onmanorama, Sandra revealed:
- Drug budgets are part of film production in some cases.
- Separate rooms are allocated on sets specifically for substance use.
- Many industry insiders are aware of this but stay silent.
- Even filmmakers fear filing complaints, worrying that it could halt production if a lead actor is implicated.
She emphasized that drugs are easily available on film sets and don’t require a “network” for procurement anymore.
Fear of Speaking OutSandra expressed frustration that no one is willing to take a stand. "Even though everyone knows what’s happening, they stay quiet. Producers and directors are afraid their films will be delayed or scrapped if actors are exposed," she said.
Previous IncidentsThis isn’t the first time the issue has surfaced. Last year, actress Vincy Alocious accused actor Shine Tom Chacko of harassment under the influence of drugs on the sets of Suthravakyam. Initially hesitant to name him, she later confirmed it was Shine who allegedly spat a white powder-like substance on her.
Despite some questioning, no legal action was taken. Earlier this year, Shine’s name also came up in a separate investigation involving a female drug peddler.
A Culture of SilenceSandra’s comments underline a troubling reality: while there is growing awareness of drug abuse in Malayalam cinema, there remains institutional reluctance to confront it. With no one willing to take formal action, the cycle continues unchecked.
