Netflix is adding an 'epic' six part series that is being described as Squid Game meets Shogun.

The show titled Last Samurai Standing is set to be added to the streaming giant's extensive library soon, in November. A recently released trailer gives a taste of some of the 'pulse pounding action' that will be on offer to viewers when it becomes available for viewing.

It is based on a Japanese manga of the same name, with the first two episodes set to premiere at the 30th Busan International Film Festival later this month. According to Netflix's own preview, it is set to be a “game-changer for the Japanese serial drama industry.”

Set in the late 19th century during the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga (played by Junichi Okada), gather at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize.

Each are given a wooden tag and are informed that they have now joined a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsty warriors.

When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival. The last competitor standing claims 100 billion yen. Only one survivor will come out of this mysterious and deadly game.

Leading the cast, as mentioned is Junichi Okada. Okada is a former teen popstar turned actor and martial artist. While starring in the series, he is also serving as producer and is credited with designing some of the action sequences.

According to Netflix, the production team’s commitment to authenticity is evident in the meticulous attention to costumes, weaponry, and the physical training of the cast, ensuring each character leaves a memorable impression even in the midst of rapid-fire action. The large-scale melee at Tenryuji Temple, seen briefly in the trailer was apparently filmed over multiple days, involving more than 1,000 cast and crew members.

Netflix fans are already excited for the series to drop and were quick to share their reactions to the trailer. It quickly gained comparisons with another of the streamer's hit shows that shares a similar presence.

As one person said: "Squid Game for the Samurai era. Gotta love it" Another agreed: "So basically Squid Game… but with Katanas?" While someone else added added: "Samurai Hunger Games? I'm in."

However, one person made sure to point out the history of the genre: "Japan developed the survival game genre back in the 1990s. Over the years, they have produced many high-quality projects that have become the foundation of the genre. In 2000, the manga and film Battle Royale were released, which has become a household name and is well-known. The Squid Game uses concepts that were already present in Japan."

The series setting, including historical time period also offered up comparisons from viewers to Disney+ period drama Shogun.

Many enjoyed what they have seen of Last Samurai Standing so far. One person commented: "To the people who woke up one day and said 'lets make this show' I hope your days continue to go well for the rest of your life. THIS LOOKS AWESOME!!"

One person replied: "Netflix needs to keep adapting Japanese thriller manga, because it's fire!"

Last Samurai Standing is streaming on Netflix from November 13.
