The method of death penalty in Yemen is very scary. According to media reports, earlier hanging or beheading was done there, but now the executioner punishes by shooting with a rifle. Nimisha's mother Prema Kumari has been trying to save her daughter in Yemen for the last one year.
Why is Priya not getting relief?
The case is getting difficult due to the control of Houthi rebels in Yemen and the lack of formal contact with India. In Yemen's Sharia law, there is a way for forgiveness through 'Diyat'. If Talal's family accepts the compensation, then Nimisha's life can be saved. The Indian government and human rights activist Samuel Jerome are trying till the last moment. It is hoped that some miracle happens before July 16 and Nimisha's life is saved.
What is the case of Nimisha Priya?
Nimisha Priya is a resident of Palakkad district of Kerala. In 2008, she went to Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, as a nurse. She got married in 2011 and was living there with her husband and daughter. In 2014, her family returned to India, but Nimisha stayed in Yemen. She started a clinic with Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi. But Talal allegedly snatched Nimisha's passport and threatened her after snatching her money.
Murder allegation
In 2017, Nimisha gave an injection of anesthesia to Talal to get his passport back, but by mistake the dose was overdosed and Talal died. After this, Nimisha cut the body into pieces and threw it in a water tank. In 2018, she was convicted of murder, and in 2020 a Yemeni court sentenced her to death. In 2023, her appeal was also rejected. Now she is in Sana'a jail.
