According to the rules of Udia Tithi, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast will be observed on Friday, 6 June 2025.
Why is drinking water prohibited on Nirjala Ekadashi?
Nirjala Ekadashi means Ekadashi without water. This fast falls on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month (often in June) and in this, the fasting person should not take even a single sip of water for the entire 24 hours.
Three main reasons behind Nirjala Ekadashi 2025 rules:
Symbol of complete surrender and self-restraint – Nirjala Vrat aims to control all the senses of the body and purify the soul.
Bhimsen’s Tradition – When Bhimsen could not observe other Ekadasis, Sage Vyasa advised him that observing one Nirjala Ekadashi would give him the merit of 24 Ekadashis.
Religious belief – It is believed that a person who abstains from food and water on this day attains salvation.
Who is exempted?
Drinking water is completely prohibited during the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. But there are some circumstances in which this exemption is given.
- Sick people or those who have to take medicines for health reasons.
- Pregnant women or lactating mothers.
- Elderly and children (they are not comfortable fasting).
The option for them can be - Satvik fruit and water, that is, you can observe Nirjala Ekadashi fast like other Ekadashis.
Nirjala Ekadashi 2025: When can you drink water?
The next day of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast i.e. on Dwadashi, you can break the fast with water and fruits after sunrise. But this time the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is 32 hours, so the fast of this fast will also be on 7 June at 1.20 pm.
