Indore, the cleanest city in India, is set to launch a significant campaign on December 1, aiming to establish itself as the world’s first energy literate city. The initiative, known as the 'Indore Climate Mission,' will encourage approximately 3.5 million residents to adopt energy-saving habits and reduce carbon emissions.

In a groundbreaking effort to position Indore as the world's first energy-literate city, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has teamed up with Dr. Chetan Singh, also known as the "Solar Man of India," a professor at IIT Bombay and founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation. This partnership has launched a 100-day initiative called the Indore Climate Mission (ICM).

To formalize this collaboration, an MoU was signed between the IMC and the Energy Swaraj Foundation, guided by Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava. This initiative marks the first large-scale effort to tackle carbon emissions in the city. Mayor Bhargava emphasized Indore’s global recognition and its commitment to creating a significant identity in environmental protection.

The campaign is set to run from December 1 to March 10. Dr. Chetan Singh remarked, “An invisible enemy is often more dangerous than a visible one. Indore, which has excelled in waste management and earned the title of India’s cleanest city for seven consecutive years, is now prepared to tackle the challenge of controlling invisible pollutants like carbon dioxide that contribute to climate change.”

Key components of the mission involve educating residents about the link between fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions, as well as promoting behavioral changes to decrease energy use and resource consumption. Ultimately, the ICM aims to cultivate a climate-conscious community and establish a benchmark for environmental sustainability in cities across India and beyond.

The Indore Municipal Corporation has partnered with the Energy Swaraj Foundation, an NGO led by IIT Bombay Professor Chetan Singh Solanki. The first phase of the campaign will last for 100 days, during which residents will receive training to help them lower their carbon footprints.

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava expressed the city's commitment, stating, "Our aim is to get Indore the identity of the world's first energy literate city through this campaign."

Professor Solanki, often referred to as the "Solar Man of India," emphasized that simple lifestyle changes can lead to significant energy savings. He suggested practices such as wearing clothes without ironing once a week and having one day of the week dedicated to eating uncooked food. These small adjustments can collectively contribute to a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions.

The campaign aims to achieve a monthly reduction in electricity consumption in the city by 7 to 10 percent, marking a substantial step toward a more sustainable future for Indore.
