President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Justice Yahya Afridi as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP). He will take his oath on October 26, 2024. This decision follows a nomination by a 12-member special parliamentary committee, which took place on Tuesday.
Under the provisions of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, the committee nominated Justice Afridi for this prestigious role. His appointment aligns with Articles 175A(3), 177, and 179 of the Constitution.
Justice Afridi's elevation to Chief Justice comes after the retirement of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. The summary for his appointment received approval from President Zardari, based on the recommendations from the parliamentary committee and advice from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Justice Afridi has a long-standing legal career, having enrolled as an advocate of the high court in 1990 and later as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2004. He previously served as an Assistant Advocate General in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and as a Federal Counsel for the government of Pakistan.
In 2010, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Peshawar High Court, later confirmed as a permanent judge in March 2012. Notably, Justice Afridi was the first judge from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to become Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, taking oath on December 30, 2016. He served in that capacity until his promotion to the Supreme Court of Pakistan on June 28, 2018.
