Manipur on High Alert After Reports of 900 Kuki Militants Infiltrating From Myanmar

Manipur is on heightened security alert following intelligence reports indicating that over 900 Kuki militants have infiltrated the state from Myanmar. The militants, reportedly divided into groups of 30, are suspected to be preparing for coordinated attacks on Meitei villages around September 28, 2024. These militants are said to be trained in drone-based warfare, missiles, and jungle combat techniques.

Manipur's Security Adviser, Kuldeep Singh, confirmed the seriousness of the intelligence. He said, "The intelligence report cannot be taken lightly. Unless it is proven wrong, we believe it is 100% accurate." Singh also pointed out that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for drone usage have not been fully implemented in the state, which further complicates security measures.

All senior police officers in districts along the India-Myanmar border have been alerted. This comes at a time when ethnic armed groups in Myanmar's Chin State and other regions are in conflict with the junta, leading to violent incidents near the India-Myanmar border. Some junta troops have even been reported to infiltrate India after losing battles with rebel forces.

Manipur has been facing ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities over economic benefits and quotas, creating a volatile environment that has allowed illegal infiltrations. Just a day before the intelligence report, a joint operation by the Indian Army and Manipur Police led to the recovery of a large cache of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the hilly regions of Imphal East.
