Thomas Tuchel has been named as the new head coach of the England football team, set to take charge in January 2025. The German coach, known for his successful stints with Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich, will aim to lead England to their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.
Tuchel’s appointment follows an extensive search by the English Football Association (FA) to find a replacement for Gareth Southgate, who stepped down after the Euro 2024 final. The FA announced that Tuchel had emerged as the "preferred candidate" due to his impressive track record of winning major titles across Europe.
Tuchel, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, has also secured league titles in both France and Germany. He becomes the third foreign coach to take charge of the England team, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. He succeeds Southgate, who guided England to consecutive European Championship finals and a World Cup semifinal during his eight-year tenure.
Southgate resigned after England's loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The FA stated that several candidates were interviewed before they finalized Tuchel for the role.
At 51 years old, Tuchel brings a wealth of experience, having managed at the highest levels of European football. His time at Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, alongside his Premier League experience, aligns with the FA’s criteria for a coach with proven success in both domestic and international competitions.
Tuchel’s challenge will be to end England’s long wait for a major tournament victory, with the FA emphasizing the need for a coach who can consistently position the team among the world’s elite.
England’s last major triumph was their World Cup victory in 1966, and Tuchel will now face the task of adding another trophy to the nation’s history.
