US Imposes New Sanctions on Iran's Petroleum Sector After Attack on Israel

The United States has announced new sanctions targeting Iran's petroleum and petrochemical industries in response to its October 1 missile attack on Israel. These measures include sanctions on 16 entities involved in Iran's petroleum trade and the blocking of 23 vessels.

In a post on social media, a US State Department spokesperson said, "We are announcing broad new sanctions on Iran's petroleum and petrochemical sectors to further deny the Iranian regime the resources it may use to fund its destabilizing activities."

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that the sanctions aim to disrupt the revenue flow Iran uses to fund its nuclear program and support regional terrorist groups. He said, "In the aftermath of Iran's unprecedented October 1 attack against Israel, we made clear that we would impose consequences for Iran's actions."

Blinken explained that the US Department of State has sanctioned six entities involved in the Iranian petroleum trade and blocked six vessels. At the same time, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on 10 additional entities and blocked 17 vessels for their involvement in Iranian petroleum and petrochemical shipments.

US Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen said, "In response to Iran's attack on Israel, the United States is taking decisive action to further disrupt the Iranian regime's ability to fund its destabilizing activities." She added that the sanctions target Iran's efforts to funnel energy revenues into dangerous activities, including its nuclear program, missile development, and support for regional terrorism.

Blinken further stressed that the US remains committed to limiting Iran’s financial resources for its harmful activities. He noted that these actions would be reinforced through close coordination with US allies and partners.

On October 1, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles towards Israel. In response, US military forces worked closely with Israeli defense units to intercept the missiles, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling the attack a "big mistake" for which Tehran would face consequences.
