Deogarh: A farmer was reportedly trampled to death by a wild elephant in a village in Odisha’s Deogarh district on Saturday.
According to sources, the farmer, identified as Jatra Pradhan of Kanjiamba village under Riamal forest range of the district had gone to work in the farmland behind his house in the afternoon.
While he was working in the farmland, the elephant came there and started stamping on the brinjal plants in the field. As Jatra tried to herd the elephant away by shouting at it, the wild animal rushed towards him and trampled him to death.
On hearing Jara’s shouting, his family members went to the farmland to find him lying dead while the elephant was retreating back to the nearby forest.
On being informed by them, a team of Forest officials, led by ranger Niranjan Dharua from Riamal went to the village and started investigation. While the elephant remained untraced, tension prevailed in the village, the sources said.
