Berhampur: A fire broke out at MKCG Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Odisha’s Berhampur late on Sunday.
According to sources, the fire erupted on the ground floor of Nidan Kendra building at around 2 pm due to an alleged short circuit in the biochemistry division’s main laboratory, which then spread to the main examination hall.
It took firefighters over two hours to douse the flames.
Sources said that some mechanical issue in the AC might have sparked the fire. Instruments and chemical substances were destroyed in the fire. A few staff members present in the affected wing complained of suffocation but are now stable.
Full extent of damage to medical diagnostic equipment and its impact on healthcare services at the institute will be determined following an investigation by senior officials, the sources added.
