Aaron Rodgers drops team-mate in it after late New York Jets error in Buffalo Bills defeat

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has pointed the finger at wide receiver Mike Williams for a critical fourth-quarter interception, claiming Williams ran the wrong route during their defeat to the Buffalo Bills.

With the Jets trailing by three and driving to take the lead, Rodgers targeted Williams downfield. However, the 30-year-old receiver's adjustment in mid-air gave cornerback Taron Johnson the opportunity to intercept the ball, a move that ultimately allowed the Bills to seal the game.

Rodgers, visibly irate on the sidelines after the play, didn't mince words when discussing the costly error. He insisted that Williams was supposed to run a go-route along the sideline but instead opted for an in-breaking route, leading to the turnover.

Speaking after the match, Rodgers explained: "We [were supposed to have] two verticals. Allen's [Lazard] down the seam, Mike's [Williams] down the red line [sideline go-route].

"I'm looking at Allen, he puts his hand up, three guys go with him. So, I'm throwing a no-look to the red line. When I peek my eyes back there [Williams] is running an in-breaker. It's gotta be down the red line."

The veteran quarterback made it clear that Williams' deviation from the planned go-route to an in-breaker was the reason for his last-second throw alteration and the subsequent interception.

Despite being a former first-round pick and a key receiver with the Chargers, Williams' tenure with the Jets hasn't been as successful as he'd hoped, appearing to be Rodgers' fourth or fifth choice throughout the season. Trade talks involving Williams have also surfaced, given the Jets' ongoing interest in Davante Adams.

The Jets suffered another disappointing defeat, bringing their record to 2-4 and highlighting the need for some victories in the coming weeks.

However, the team showed significant improvement both offensively and defensively after the dismissal of former head coach Robert Saleh. Rodgers' offence racked up over 400 yards, while the defence limited Josh Allen to a mere 18 rushing yards on nine attempts.

They challenged the quarterback to outplay them with his arm, which he managed to do with impressive throws to Dalton Kincaid and rookie running back Ray Davis.
