CBS show Face the Nation ground to a halt in a breaking news revelation, with host Margaret Brennan leaving secretary of state Marco Rubio "speechless" and stuttering in a "demolishing" blow to US president Donald Trump. The pair found themselves locked in a fiery clash live on-air as Brennan confronted the politician on Trump's meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump insisted he would demand a ceasefire agreement from Russian leader Vladimir Putin as he heads to the White House in Washington D.C. European leaders are also flying in to attend the talks, including UK prime minister Keir Starmer.
But Brennan skewered Rubio with just one question, asking: "You know there is concern from the Europeans that President Zelensky is going to be bullied into signing something away. That's why you have these European leaders coming as backup tomorrow. Can you reassure them?"
A stuttering Rubio replied: "No it isn't. That's not why they're coming, that's not true. No but that's not- why would- that's not true! They're not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelensky from being bullied. They're coming-"
But he was cut off as Brennan pointed out: "That February Oval Office meeting in front of television cameras, where President Zelensky was dressed down-"
He asked: "Do you know how many meetings they've had since then?" as she responded: "Oh I know! I was just watching the one where Vladimir Putin had the red carpet rolled out for him!"
Rubio continued: "No, with Zelensky. We've had one meeting with Putin and, like, a dozen meetings with Zelensky. But that's not true, they're not coming here tomorrow to keep Zelensky from being bullied. They're coming here tomorrow because we've been working with the Europeans, we talked to them last week, there were meetings in the UK the previous weekend-"
Brennan interrupted to point out: "And they said President Trump was going to demand a ceasefire!"
Rubio seemed keen to repeat himself as he once again insisted: "But you said they're coming here tomorrow to keep Zelensky from being bullied, they're not coming here tomorrow- This is such a stupid media error, 'They're coming here tomorrow because Trump is going to bully Zelensky into a bad deal', we've been working with these people for weeks on this stuff.
"They're coming here tomorrow because they chose to come here tomorrow, we invited them to come, the president invited them to come!"
Viewers on X were left stunned by the segment, with one tweeting: "BREAKING: Margaret Brennan just left Marco Rubio speechless after demolishing Donald Trump for pandering to Putin and shinning our allies in Ukraine. This is a must watch."
Someone else said: "Politics aside, that's the power of journalism." While a third said: "Shame. Rubio shrugs while Brennan reminds him: America rolled out a red carpet for a butcher."
