There is a seaside city in Portugal that has some of the best beaches in Europe, as well as cheap drinks and great food. Brits go abroad in their millions over the summer months, with many of them opting for destinations in Spain, Italy and Portugal. For many, this stunning seaside city is the best place to go with stunning views, cheap drinks and plenty to do if you are looking for fun in the sun.
When it comes to a sun holiday, Brits look for things like value for money, scenery and stunning beaches. Many have praised Lagos, which is located in the Algarve region of Portugal, as one of the best places in Europe to go for a seaside getaway. Lagos is located on the southern coast of the country and boasts some highly rated beaches. This city is relatively small, home to more than 30,000, but it swells in the summer as huge numbers of tourists arrive.
One Reddit user asked for recommendations for some of the best beach towns and cities to vacation in Europe. Many were quick to recommend their favourites, with Lagos popping up in the comments section a number of times.
One person wrote: "The Algarve region in Portugal has some beautiful beaches and is less expensive than other parts of Europe that I compared."
Another said: "The Algarve is beautiful. We found a lovely place in Lagos and used it as a base to travel the whole of the south coast." A third wrote that the beaches in Lagos are "amazing" and that the sand is "beautiful".
Lagos has plenty to offer tourists. On Tripadvisor, the top-rated attraction there is Ponta da Piedade, a coastal boardwalk with amazing views of the sea cliffs. People have praised this spot for its natural beauty.
One reviewer said: "Breathtaking views. Very impressed by the quality of the infrastructure that allows tourists to meander around the rock formations and beaches. Lots of boardwalks and stairs to move around the rocky outcrops safely without hindering the beautiful views."
Another said: "Ponta da Piedade is truly one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I've ever experienced in all my years of travel. It was the highlight of my trip to Lagos, and it did not disappoint! Seeing it by tuk-tuk was an added bonus-we were able to go much farther than cars could from the parking lot, saving a lot of walking while still taking in the stunning views. "
Other popular attractions in the area include other coastal viewpoints such as Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo. For wine drinkers, Portugal is the place to be.
Drinks Merchants has come up with a list of the best countries for cheap wine, and Portugal gets an inclusion for its £2.53 average price per bottle.
To get to Lagos from the UK, you would fly into Faro Airport (FAO). There are direct flights from many UK airports to Faro.
