Gary Lineker MOTD replacement: Wildcard appointment tipped as viewers make feelings clear

Speculation is rife over who could ultimately replace the former England striker in the hot seat.

And viewers of the show have indicated they want to see a wildcard appointment taking on the role.

We asked Express Sport readers for their views on the right person to succeed Lineker, who became Match of the Day presenter in 1999 after taking over from Des Lynam.

Mark Chapman, who currently presents Match of the Day 2 on a Sunday evening, was the runaway leader of the poll after bagging 23 per cent of the vote, with Gabby Logan following with 11 per cent.

Former Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin received 8 per cent of the vote, with ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards gaining a 7 per cent share.

Alex Scott, Jermaine Jenas and Clare Balding each had less than 5 per cent of the vote. But, staggeringly, a whopping 40 per cent of the people who voted said they wanted to see someone else entirely undertaking the presenting duties.

Lineker has gained a huge following during his time at the BBC, but has hit the headlines in recent years for his outspoken views on social media.

Last year, he was by the Beeb after comparing the language used by the government while launching a new asylum policy to language used by the Nazi regime in Germany.

At the start of October, speculation brewed about whether he may be set to announce he is standing down from his role, and it was even reported that the BBC had announcing his shock exit. However, a BBC spokesperson : "We have nothing to announce, and we have not agreed next steps with regard to his contract. He is on contract until the end of the season."

Lineker, who bagged 48 goals in 80 games for England, joked about the news at the start of last Saturday's show as he told viewers: "Seven games on the way and it's my final show... before the international break."

And the Leicester fan then revealed during a conversation with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on podcast: "So it's natural at some point that you have to have conversations, and they've just started. So I don't know why it all spiralled out of control, but..."
