insists there are 'no excuses' for his shocking miss during his final home match for Manchester City. Thankfully for the Belgium international, the sitter did not prove costly as Pep Guardiola's cruised to a 3-1 victory over to take a major step towards securing Champions League football next season.
After Omar Marmoush had smashed a sensational opener past Kepa Arrizabalaga, the winger then turned creator to fire a neat cross across the face of the goal to his onrushing captain.
The Etihad Stadium was then stunned into silence when De Bruyne's shot ricochet back off the woodwork when the goal was at his mercy from just a couple of yards out, and he was unable to get on the scoresheet before being withdrawn after 69 minutes.
Speaking about the miss to Sky Sports, De Bruyne said: "It's terrible, it's terrible." Former City star Micah Richards then replied: "In fairness though, there was a little bobble, and you did kick your other foot so I am giving you an excuse."
The iconic No. 17 the replied: "There's no excuses. My son is going to be very tough on me today."
De Bruyne ensured that the miss did not dampen his spirits once the full-time whistle had sounded, giving a heartfelt speech to City fans after the match to thank them for their support over the years.
He said: "Manchester is home, Manchester is where these little kids were born. I came here with my wife, Michelle, to stay for a long time, didn't expect to be here 10 years. To do what we've done as a club, supporters, teammates we've won everything. We made the city, the club bigger and now they're going to take over.
"I wanted to play with creativity, I wanted to play with passion. I wanted to enjoy football and I hope everyone enjoyed it. Everybody has pushed me so hard inside and outside the club to be the best version of myself and these guys, everybody we see on the screen and these guys in front of me have made me better than I was before. It's an honour to play with these guys. I've made so many friends for life. We'll be back for sure soon."
City then announced that De Bruyne will be honoured outside of the Etihad with a statue, a mural at the club's training facilities and with a road being named after him.
