had been in Argentina to watch his former bandmate perform
Liam is said to have fallen from a hotel balcony in Argentina as paramedics and police rushed to the scene.
Just days before, he attended Horan's performance in Buenos Aires on October 2, telling fans that he and Niall had "things to square up".
He said: "We're going to Argentina. One, because we want to. Two, because we want to. And three, because Niall Horan's playing down there and I think we might just go and say 'hello'.
"It's been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We've got a lot to talk about and I would like to square up a couple things with the boy. No bad vibes or nothing like that but we just need to talk."
Videos quickly began circulating which showed Liam enjoying himself at the concert, as he was seen dancing and singing along, sparking the attention of nearby fans.
The singer could be seen performing the famous macarena dance as he was spoken to by security.
His final Instagram post was a picture of One Direction in a heartbreaking tribute to the band. The post was quickly flooded with messages of condolences and grief from fans.
In a statement, City ambulance service provider spokesman Alberto Crescenti confirmed Liam suffered "very serious injuries incompatible with life."
He told TN: "At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel.
"At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation."
