Newcastle player Dan Burn has been left red-faced after a video of him playing golf emerged on social media. The towering defender enjoyed a brilliant 2024/25 campaign, helping the Magpies to end their trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup.
He scored the opening goal in the final against Liverpool before Alexander Isak bagged what turned out to be the winner.
Burn also earned a maiden England call-up, becoming the oldest debutant since Kevin Davies in 2010. He will be hoping to carry his impressive form into the new campaign as Newcastle look to retain their place in the Champions League. They secured qualification at the end of last season by finishing fifth, edging out sixth-placed Aston Villa on goal difference.
Ahead of the Premier League returning this weekend, Burn has been enjoying some downtime on the golf course. While the 33-year-old is unquestionably good at football, the same cannot be said when it comes to his ability from the tee.
In a video which is being shared on social media, Burn is spotted whipping out his club at Blyth Golf Club. After taking some time to compose himself, he swings for the ball but can only muster a wild slice out of bounds.
After his ball sails into the adjacent trees, Burn is seen hitting his club against the ground in a moment of frustration. From the video, it seems clear that he needs more practice if he wants to start ripping up fairways like many of his peers.
Many footballers enjoy playing golf as a way to unwind between matches and training sessions. The likes of Gareth Bale, Harry Kane, Andriy Shevchenko and Jimmy Bullard have all shown a huge passion for the sport over the years.
Last month, former Everton defender Alan Stubbs banked £10,000 for charity by winning the Cardhu Celebrity Pro-Am. Playing off a handicap of six, he claimed the honours alongside former Ryder Cup player Jarmo Sandelin.
Stubbs finished level with Shevchenko but was declared the winner on a countback. Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Di Matteo and Teddy Sheringham were just some of the other former players to take part.
Nick Pope is among the keen golfers in Newcastle's current squad, having been spotted playing alongside Shay Given at Close House Golf Club in 2023.
Isak, meanwhile, has admitted that he does not have the patience for golf despite acting as a caddie for his Sweden team-mates in Marbella last year.
He told Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen: "I was not golfing but I was there to support the boys. I was the caddie. I drove the car. I was really just there to get some sun and some peace."
