Richard Osman 'turned down' role in Wednesday and drops clue about who he nearly played

The Thursday Murder Club author Richard Osman has revealed that he was asked to audition for Netflix show Wednesday, hinting at the role he could have played.

Three years have gone by since Wednesday became a global phenomenon on Netflix, with Jenna Ortega reviving the darkly hilarious role of Wednesday Addams. Series two part one is now ready to drop with the first four episodes coming out tomorrow, Wednesday, August 6, and excitement for the new season has reached its peak.

The Netflix hit was among the topics Osman spoke about with co-host Marina Hyde on his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, where he baffled both Hyde and listeners with an unexpected fact.

In the final few minutes of the episode, Osman shared: "They asked me to audition for a role in Wednesday. I couldn't do it.

"But I assume because of my height and, I assume because it's the Addams Family, I assume there's some sort of tallness in it."

Known for his BBC hit series Pointless with Alexander Armstrong and various other quiz shows, Osman is easily recognisable thanks to his height, as he stands at a staggering 6ft 7in tall.

While the 54-year-old didn't share who he was set to audition for in Wednesday, due to the character's stature, it is believed Osman could have played the Addams family's butler Lurch.

The silent henchman was played by actor George Burcea in Wednesday season one who is 6ft 3, but has been replaced by actor and former basketball player Joonas Suotamo, who stands at an incredible 6ft 11.

Reacting to Osman's admission, Hyde exclaimed: "Oh my God! Sorry, no, I did not know that and I cannot believe you didn't do it!"

He continued: "I can't remember why I couldn't do it...I'm not an actor in any way whatsoever, not interested in being an actor.

"But the biggest show in the world, you're like 'maybe', I just thought 'for the podcast'."

"Do everything for the podcast!" Hyde laughed as he added: "It'll be fun if I was in that for the podcast."

Osman has been busy elsewhere though, as his novel The Thursday Murder Club has been transformed into a Netflix movie, starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie.

The Thursday Murder Club, which Osman is an executive producer on, will debut on Thursday, August 28.

Wednesday season two premieres on Wednesday, August 6, on Netflix.
