Stereotype or not, are known for their coldness, from avoiding eye contact on the tube to knowing nothing about their neighbours. But the European city of Gothenburg, dubbed 'little London', is the complete opposite when it comes to sociability. In fact, the city is known to be one of the friendliest and was previously voted .
Gothenburg, also known as Göteborg, is Sweden's second-largest city and a major port on the west coast. It's known for its vibrant culture and thriving food scene, including and a strong craft beer scene. Gothenburg is also known for its sustainability efforts, with many initiatives in place to promote environmental responsibility.
But why was this city dubbed 'little London'?

"The nickname 'Little London' was first used in a newspaper in 1766," explains Håkan Strömberg, educational officer at the Museum of Gothenburg.
"The Brits were the largest group during the 1700s and early 1800s, mainly because Sweden was a country close by, it was economically underdeveloped compared to England and Scotland and had a lot of raw materials. To put it simply, could make some money here."
The city's reputation as a British district dates back to the 1700s when trade brought many foreign influences to the Västra Götaland region.
With the arrival of merchants and shipbuilders like Charles Chapman, David Carnegie, and James Dickson moving to the area, local residents began to notice a growing list of similarities between the port city and the British capital.
Even one of Sweden's most renowned scientists, Carl Von Linné, is said to have commented on the similarities between the two cities when he visited Gothenburg in the 1700s.
Today in Gothenburg, you could explore the vibrant Haga district, visit the Universeum science center, enjoy the Slottsskogen park, or ride the Liseberg amusement park, explore the Gothenburg archipelago, visit the Gothenburg Museum of Art, or check out the Feskekörka fish market.
They even have a British restaurant called 'Lilla London', which believe it or not means 'little London'. It's a central local spot, popular for after-work drinks and gatherings.
