Civic body launches clean-up drive, removes encroachments

Kanpur: A team of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation, led by Mayor Pramila Pandey, removed illegal structures in the city areas on Monday.

On April 4, the mayor had appealed to the citizens to remove encroachment from drains, nullahs and other places within 15 days or the KMC would remove them so that the draoins and nullahs could be cleaned and de-silted properly before monsoon.

The mayor had taken out a rally and roamed almost the entire city with all zonal officers. Later, she convened a meeting with officials and sought information about the nullahs and drains. The engineering department informed her that around 97 nullahs and 500 drains were encroached.

The mayor on Monday led the anti-encroachment drive from front in Zone-4 and demolished 35 pucca constructions, 15 tin sheds, 29 shanty shops, 8 semi pucca constructions, 30 bamboo tattars, 8 hoardings and 350 cut-outs, removed 15 tarpaulin covers, 80 banners and 600 flags from the roads and houses.

The squad also demolished five biryani shops and seized the tables, chairs and other material. All this was demolished and seized in between the old shelter house to Bajaria crossing and Bajaria police station to Bakarmadni slope. All those constructions were raised over Sisamau nullah. The enforcement also demolished and removed the encroachments made on footpaths and drains in that area.

According to Kanpur Municipal Corporation officials, the drive had started at 8 am. The mayor led the drive from the front foot during which additional commissioner, station police officer Bajaria police station, zonal officer, revenue officer and others were present.
