Raipur: In a heart-wrenching incident, a woman in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh reportedly ended her life by jumping in front of a train with her one-year-old son in her arms. While the mother died instantly, the infant survived and as per doctors, didn't sustain any injuries. The toddler's cries in the dead of the night led villagers to him.
The incident occurred late Friday between Kalyanpur and Kotmisonar railway stations in Akaltara police jurisdiction. According to station house officer Manikant Pandey, the incident came to light when villagers found the child and police were informed immediately. The child was taken to the Akaltara Community Health Centre and doctors confirmed he had not sustained any injuries.
The woman was later identified as Shivkumari Nayak, a resident of Darri Tand village. Police said that the preliminary investigation indicate that Shivkumari had stepped out of her house late at night after a domestic dispute with her husband, Mantram Nayak. The couple had recently returned from Delhi, and tensions in the relationship had been escalating.
On Friday night, following an argument, she took her little child and left home. Hours later, she was found dead.
Police circulated the child's photo on social media to trace his identity, which led to the eventual confirmation of the deceased identity. The family was informed, and after a postmortem, the body was handed over to the relatives.
The exact circumstances and reasons behind Shivkumari's steps still remain under investigation, police said.
The kin of deceased and the villagers around are in shock and grief for the toddler who lost his mother.
