Ravi Shastri was all praise for Rishabh Pant ’s fearless counter-attack at Headingley, describing the India vice-captain’s second-innings century as proof of a “sharp cricket brain” hidden beneath his showmanship.

Pant’s aggressive 118 off 140 balls, featuring 15 fours and three sixes, turned the tide after an early wobble on Day 4 and, combined with KL Rahul’s composed 137, powered India to a commanding position, setting a 371-run target for England to win. The duo’s 195-run partnership not only frustrated England’s bowlers but also showcased the perfect blend of technique and firepower that has become this team’s hallmark overseas.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Shastri highlighted how Pant’s batting, though often branded reckless, is far more calculated than people assume. “People say Pant's batting defies logic, but there is an element of a sharp cricket brain behind it. He knows when to counterattack ,” Shastri said, adding that India will be delighted with the way Rahul’s technical solidity complemented Pant’s fireworks.

"There is plenty of food for thought, but India will be very happy after a technical masterpiece from Rahul and the flamboyance and exuberance that you can imagine from Pant ," he added.

Shastri also rued Pant’s tendency to miss out on bigger milestones, pointing out he could already have a double-digit count of Test centuries if not for seven dismissals in the 90s.

While Pant’s knock ended when he miscued Shoaib Bashir straight to Zak Crawley , Rahul held firm for longer at the other end, ensuring India tightened their grip heading into the final day.

After India were bowled out for 364, England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett have managed to help England to 21 runs in six overs without the loss of a wicket. As play resumes on Tuesday, Day 5 will have all to play for for both sides.
