Apple is preparing a significant shift in its iPhone release strategy for 2026, moving away from its traditional single fall launch to a staggered schedule that will extend across two seasons, according to a report from The Information.
The tech giant plans to release only its premium iPhone models—the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max—in fall 2026, alongside Apple's first-ever foldable iPhone . The standard iPhone 18 and a successor to the budget-friendly iPhone 16e will be delayed until spring 2027, The Information reports, citing people familiar with the matter.
First foldable iPhone takes shape
Apple's first foldable device will reportedly feature a book-style design with a 5.7-inch external screen that expands to nearly 8 inches when opened. The report indicates the device will measure just 4.5-4.8mm when unfolded and will incorporate Face ID rather than Touch ID, according to The Information.
What would be the new with iPhone 18 series
The Information's report also reveals Apple's premium iPhone 18 Pro models will feature under-display Face ID technology , leaving only a small cutout for the front-facing camera, a significant design advancement for iPhones.
Manufacturers are reportedly preparing for production challenges, with the standard iPhone 18 and its budget counterpart scheduled to undergo manufacturing trials first in India, furthering Apple's efforts to diversify production beyond China.
This strategic shift comes as Apple seeks to rejuvenate iPhone sales, which have remained relatively static in recent years due to incremental year-over-year upgrades. By spacing out releases, Apple apparently hopes to maintain consumer interest throughout the year and potentially boost sales of its higher-margin Pro models.
