NEW DELHI: Taking aim at non-performing govt officers, road transport minister Nitin Gadkari Thursday said such personnel will do a favour by not showing up in office.

“I tell govt officers that the performance audit is more important than the financial audit. Mujhe toh aisa lagta hai ki kuchh log office nehin aayenge toh bada ehsan ho jayega (If some officers don’t come to office, they will do great a favour),” Gadkari said while addressing the Deloitte India summit.

The minister has often flagged non-performance and delay in decision making by govt officials as big hurdles for fast economic growth .

He has even slammed officials for not understanding the “value of time” and delaying the release of dues, saying, “People who get salary on the last day of the month, they don’t understand the value of time and the financial loss that others face because of delay in release of payments.”

Talking on the topic of ‘Arohaṇa, Growth with Impact’, Gadkari stressed on the need to do more in the agriculture, rural and tribal sectors to accelerate economic growth.

“My experience is that the urban-centric mentality of organisations and govts are not very positive about the rural, agriculture and tribal sectors. Everything is concentrated in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai... and that urban-centric mentality is creating a lot of economic discrimination in society. People in agriculture, rural, tribal and forest sectors are facing a lot of economic problems,” he said.

Gadkari stressed on the need for separate growth strategies for urban and rural sectors while calling for innovative policies to ensure balanced development. He said leveraging technology and adoption of sustainable practices can boost India’s rural economy.

The minister also said due to a big push to infrastructure development, India’s logistics cost is set to come down to single-digits within the next five years.
