NEW DELHI: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz , who arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for a three-day visit, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to discuss a wide-range of topics in key areas. PM Modi later announced that Germany has decided to increase visas for skilled Indian workforce from 20,000 to 90,000.

Speaking at the 18th Asia Pacific Conference of German Business (APK 2024), PM Modi said, "We have made a roadmap of Viksit Bharat in the coming 25 years. I am happy that in this important time, the German cabinet has released the 'Focus on India' document. Germany has decided to increase the visa number for the skilled Indian workforce from 20,000 to 90,000. It will give a new pace to Germany's growth."

Inviting German businesses to invest in India, PM Modi highlighted the country's potential as a global trade and manufacturing hub. He urged them to participate in the 'Make in India' initiative and produce goods for the global market.

"This is the right time to join India's growth story. India becoming a global trade and manufacturing hub," said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister also stressed that India is making record investments in infrastructure, particularly in roads and ports. He highlighted the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region for the future of global trade and security.

After the conference, Scholz shared a photo with PM Modi on X and wrote, "In this world, we need friends and allies – just like India and Germany. Dear Narendra Modi, thank you for your warm welcome in New Delhi!"

Scholz and PM Modi will co-chair the seventh Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC). The discussions between PM Modi and Scholz will cover defense, trade, and clean energy. They will also review the German-Indian Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), which was agreed upon in a previous meeting. The last IGC was held in Berlin in May 2022.

German vice chancellor Robert Habeck earlier said, "The fact that this conference is held at the same time as the Indo-German inter-governmental consultations here at the heart of India is proof of the tremendous importance of the partnership that exists between India and Germany. For decades, our two countries have been working together on the basis of stable trust and mutual consideration. This is a quality that I am very, very grateful for, especially at a time characterized by enormous global challenges. As we are going through them and living with them, the world is changing, not always for the better. Geopolitical tensions are growing, particularly here in the Indian Pacific region, but also Europe. We only need to think of the war of aggression waged by Russia on Ukraine."
