NEW DELHI: The objective of Operation Sindoor , which was launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgham attack, is that if there are terrorist attacks, India will act against the perpetrators, the supporters, the financiers, and the enablers, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday.
During a Washington press conference on Wednesday, Jaishankar emphasised, "What is important for us in the Quad statement, as also the statement that the Security Council had issued on April 25, is that the perpetrators of terrorism must be held accountable. They must be brought to justice."
He further stated, "And that's important because we then have to communicate to the world what we did. On May 7, the objective of Operation Sindoor is that if there are terrorist attacks, we will act against the perpetrators, the supporters, the financiers, and the enablers. So that message, I think, was conveyed with great clarity."
The Quad Foreign Ministers - Jaishankar, US secretary of state Marco Rubio, Australian foreign minister Penny Wong, and Japanese foreign minister Takeshi Iwaya - issued a joint statement denouncing terrorism and extremism, including cross-border activities.
They strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 casualties.
The joint statement urged swift justice for those responsible: "We call for the perpetrators, organisers, and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice without any delay and urge all UN member states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UNSCRs, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard."
The UN Security Council's press statement condemned the Pahalgam attack, emphasising accountability for the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors.
The Security Council members insisted on holding those responsible for the killings accountable.
Operation Sindoor was India's response targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the Pahalgam attack, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), affiliated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Jaishankar discussed India's decades-long terrorism challenges with Quad counterparts and global partners, affirming India's firm response and right to self-defence.
Beyond Quad discussions, Jaishankar held productive bilateral meetings with Rubio, reviewing recent developments and future plans, covering trade, technology, defence, security, energy and mobility. He also met separately with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
