LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI: RSS has thrown its weight behind UP CM Yogi Adityanath ’s rallying cry for Hindu unity , signalling a growing emphasis within Sangh Parivar on consolidating the community ahead of crucial political contests. The slogan “batenge toh katenge” (if divided, we perish), first used by Yogi in the context of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, has now been embraced by RSS functionaries and endorsed by PM Narendra Modi.

Addressing reporters after RSS’s two-day national meet in Mathura, general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale highlighted on Saturday the importance of Hindu unity. “Hindu samaj ekta mein nahi rahega toh aaj kal ki bhasha mein ‘batenge toh katenge’ ho sakta hai (If Hindu society doesn’t stay united, it may perish),” he said, adding that efforts to divide Hindus along caste lines were part of a conspiracy.

At a rally in Thane on Oct 5, PM Modi had also stressed the importance of unity: “Agar hum batenge toh bantne wale mehfil sajayenge (If we get divided, the divisive forces will celebrate).” The same day, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat spoke at an event in Rajasthan’s Baran and reiterated the call for Hindu unity and underscored the need to eliminate regional, linguistic, and caste differences. Bhagwat asserted that India is a “Hindu nation”.

The RSS endorsement of Yogi’s slogan comes amid growing concern within BJP over electoral setbacks attributed to minority consolidation. Recent bypolls defeats in Maharashtra, such as in Dhule and Mumbai North East have raised alarms.

Observers believe RSS’s backing strengthens Yogi’s position within BJP, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Hosabale provided insights into discussions between Yogi and Bhagwat, revealing that the primary topic was preparations for Kumbh Mela in 2025.
