Chief Justice of India B R Gavai on Thursday said he will leave his official residence within the time allowed under the rules.
Speaking at the farewell event for Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia , who retires on August 9, the CJI said, "After retirement, Justice Dhulia will be among the rare judges who vacate their government accommodation immediately. I would like to do the same. I may not find the time to secure a proper house before 24th November, but I assure you I’ll move out within the time allowed under the rules,” Bar & Bench quoted.
Without naming anyone, CJI Gavai seemed to refer to former Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, who retired in November 2024 but vacated the official residence only a few days ago.
A row had broken out last month when the Supreme Court administration, under CJI Gavai, asked the Union Housing Ministry to take back the Krishna Menon Marg bungalow occupied by the former CJI.
Justice Chandrachud had later explained that he extended his stay because it was hard to find suitable housing for his daughters, who have rare medical conditions and need wheelchair-accessible facilities.
