A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck the Drake Passage on Friday 4.16pm HST, according to the US Tsunami Warning System.
The quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of approximately 36 kilometers. The Drake Passage, situated between the southern tip of South America and Antarctica, is known for significant seismic activity due to its tectonic setting.
Despite the strength of the earthquake, Hawaiian authorities confirmed that there is was no tsunami threat to the island. While a tsunami threat may exist for parts of the Pacific closer to the epicenter, no warnings have been issued for distant regions at this time.
