In a recent exchange on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised El Salvador 's President Nayib Bukele , calling him "an amazing leader." Musk shared that their conversation covered topics such as the future of humanity and the impact of technology, including AI and robotics.

"Just had an excellent conversation with President Nayib Bukele ! We talked a lot about the nature of reality, future of humanity and how technology like AI and robotics will affect the world," Musk wrote in his post on X.

Bukele reciprocated the compliment, describing Musk as "one of the great minds of our time."

The Salvadoran president shared a brief video of Musk welcoming him to his gigafactory in Austin, Texas, where Tesla electric car batteries are produced.

Nayib Bukele has ruled El Salvador for nearly two and a half years under a state of emergency that has suspended essential civil rights. Each month, the legislature, dominated by Bukele's New Ideas party , extends these emergency powers, justified by the need to combat violent street gangs. Despite the ongoing state of emergency, Bukele claims that security improvements can be sustained without these measures in the long term. In a recent interview, he suggested a future plan to restore constitutional rights, although human rights organisations have raised concerns about due process violations, including mass arrests without fair trials.

Bukele is a highly active social media user, favouring platforms like Twitter and Instagram to communicate directly with the public. However, he rarely holds press conferences, AFP reported.

Who is Nayib Bukele?

Known as the 'world's coolest dictator', Bukele's rise to power began in 2019 when he capitalised on widespread dissatisfaction with traditional political parties. His image as a modern leader is complemented by his use of social media to engage with citizens, often sporting casual attire and sharing memes. Critics, however, argue that his leadership style is authoritarian.

Since taking office, Bukele has implemented controversial policies, including making Bitcoin legal tender and deploying the military to combat gangs. While his approval rating exceeds 80%, and he is praised for improving safety, he faces allegations of undermining democracy. Over 81,000 people have been arrested under his regime, often without due process.

International concerns have been raised about Bukele's grip on power, particularly his influence over the judiciary and his government's aggressive stance towards dissent. Critics label him a dictator, citing his consolidation of power and diminishing checks and balances in government.
